The implementation of
the Municipalities and Communities Act in Samos (within the framework of the
“Kapodistrias” project) led to the division of the island into four
municipalities: Vathi and Pythagoreio in the eastern part, Karlovassi in the
western part.
The new municipalities resemble the parts which Samos
was divided into during the period of the principality regime (1834-1912);
those parts were the following: the part of Vathi, the part of Chora, the part
of Karlovassi and the part of Marathokampos. An MP of the local government was
elected for each part.
The municipality of Vathi includes the town of Samos as well as the
communities of Vathi, Paliokastro, Kokkari, Vourliotes, Aghios Konstantinos,
Manolates, Stavrinides and Ampelos. The island’s population numbers 12,384
inhabitants, according to the 2001 census: the town of Samos numbers 6,275
inhabitants, Ag. Konstantinos
394, Ampelos 375, Vathi 2,875, Vourliotes 602, Kokkari 973, Manolates 137,
Paliokastro 684 and Stavrinides 69 inhabitants.
